It is with the deep regret and a heavy heart that the Temple Fire Company No. 1 announces the passing of Retired Fire Chief Leroy “Gig” Biehl. Leroy joined the department in 1966. Leroy served as a firefighter, driver, and rose to the rank of Assistant Chief serving from 1961 until 1974. Leroy served as Fire Chief from 1977 to 1979 and retired in 1980. Leroy also served as a trustee in the Berks County Fireman’s Association and the Berks County Fire Chief’s Association. Not only did Leroy serve the fire department in numerous capacities and committees, beginning on the Temple Recreation Board then as a councilman for 9 years and eventually as the Mayor of Temple Borough for 4 years. A viewing will be held on Monday, April 4, 2016 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Milkins Giles Funeral Home, 4914 Kutztown Road, Temple. A second viewing will be held on Tuesday, April 5, 2016 beginning at 10:00 AM followed by a procession to the Salem Shalter’s Lutheran Church, 2032 Mt. Laurel Road, Alsace Township with a funeral service commencing at 12 noon. Interment will follow immediately in Salem Shalter’s Cemetery. Fire Departments intending to bring apparatus and personnel are requested to email Fire Chief Craig Reinhart at: creinhart@temple11fire.com and provide the type of apparatus and number of personnel that will attend the services Tuesday.
